When our body has an injury, whether it is whiplash, overuse, strain or degeneration such as arthritis, its natural reaction is to protect and stabilize the injured area. In doing so, our muscles over-react and get too tight; when muscles are too tight, it causes decreased blood flow through the tissues. This can impair healing, cause joints to be held together too tightly, decreasing mobility, and nerves can become compressed – which may lead to numbness, tingling, muscle weakness and pain.
Massage therapy increases circulation and blood flow, which promotes healthy tissues and aids in healing. Massage also helps to loosen tight muscles and decreases fascial adhesions – allowing muscle, nerve, bones and joints to move more easily and with less discomfort.
While a lot of our clients seek out massage for injuries, many come for the prevention of injuries. Having massage on a regular basis can help maintain and improve tissue flexibility for optimal health.
